Overview:
Learning and teaching language and literacy in contributing to expanded multilingual repertoires have become ubiquitous as a result of advancing technologies and new media. Ubiquitous technologies, such as wireless computing, networking, and artificial intelligence, enable human-computer interaction across time and space. Learning becomes more ubiquitous, wearable and mobile, and learners in such a learning environment need developing self-regulation and other skill sets to be benefit of modern technology. Therefore, a judicious use of ubiquitous technology, guided by the core principles of inclusivity and equity, can accelerate efforts towards ensuring lifelong language and literacy development for learners in the classroom and beyond. While research has long been drawn on technology ubiquity for language education and testing, there has not yet been a forum to contextualize the integration of ubiquitous technology into English-as-medium-of-instruction (EMI) and to explore opportunities and challenges learners and teachers have encountered in multilingual education.
This special issue invites contributions in the form of pedagogical interventions, case studies, curriculum innovations or transdisciplinary research which critically examine the individual and collective efforts of teachers and learners to build and exercise their capacity of digital literacy within and across the contextual conditions in which they are situated. We are also interested in contributions that examine the orchestrated efforts within language teacher education to adequately prepare teachers for transformative practice with ubiquitous technology. While we welcome submissions that focus on technology in the EMI context, research studies that critically examine languages other than English, particularly in translingual and plurilingual education and testing are highly encouraged.
